  • I think large stroage battery installations are too often disregarded as a safety hazard because the voltages are relatively low and the buss bars are uninsulated and exposed. As a matter of fact and accident such as grounding out one these buss bars can cause a flash burn of 1000 amps or more which would of course cause a horrible injury.

    Hi Bob,

Flashes are not what I deal with more and more each year, battery backup to open IBC & IFC Special Construction SECTION 3110 Automated Vehicular Gate (UL325/ASTM F2200).

Local AHJ in Cascade Township, MI had the Master remove the 24vdc from the 120vac 29 CFR 1910.399(3) "custom-made equipment and related installations." install to meet 29 CFR 1910.147 Control of Hazardous Energy.

Now when the 120vac power is disconnected for Lockout service & maintenance the machines may startup on battery to go into "Fail Safe" or Fail Secure" mode while the 120vac power is off, and upon restore.

The above gate that killed the 8-year old is the same type and with batter backup the gates in Cascade if triggered by a loop, SOS, Keypad, Card reader, Phone, or even another safety device the system was never locked out.

The below was sad, many Michigan AHJ's don't inspect for anything other that the UL Label and approve the system without meeting any of the UL325 or ASTM F2200 minimum standards of construction.

We are looking at putting together an "honest services" fraud against the municipalities that adopted Michigan PA 230 of 1972 by Municipal Ordinance the failed to hire competent officials, Plan Review, Inspections, and Building.

  • Career Safe Campus is an online 10 hour OSHA course that I teach to my High school shop students. It's easy for them to understand and navigate and only $25.00. It's an amazing course for all in the field and there are numerous options

  • Need info for our public works, fire/aid and police departments on the hazards and how to identify them of public and private electrical sources. for instance we've had quite a bit of urban flooding this fall/winter and a pw crew was called out to a flooded trailer park and asked to disconnect the power to the parkew

continuation of above email] the pw crew was smart enough to know they would have no business trying to shut off the serving utility's power. when I heard of this it reminded me of the need sometimes to test flood waters for hazardous electrical current and also the need for instructions for fist responders to deal with situations any advice and maybe a mike holt course would be appreciated r

Yes training is needed I have projects that paid for all kinds of training (private), the best was our police training to be conscious of thing around us.

To many times it is to late to think, then its over.

  • I hate to say this but from a manufacturer's point out local West Michigan PA 230 of 1972 "enforcing agency" (AHJ's) should be charged with "honest services" Fraud by the U.S. Attorney's office and investigated by the FBI.

Reasoning? Michigan adopted 29 CFR 1910.399 Definitions In Michigan Building Code Part 4 and Electrical Code Part 8 that is not recognized by some local Building & Electrical Officials.

And "RIOC" should follow up and clean up the rest of the mob.

Any one believe that NEC voluntary rules for NRTL approval denies mandatory 29 CFR 1910.399(3) ".. custom-made equipment or related installations." being "Acceptable" and "Approved" by the Assistant Secretary of Labor option is not ok ?

I liked Mike's "ground rod" article very few installers check for compliance.

  • One of the best researched reports that I've read on electrical safety is "Occupational Injuries From Electrical Shock and Arc Flash Events" from the Fire Protection Research Foundation. Google "arc flash" on the NFPA.org web site.
