Why Selective Coordination is Mandatory – Presentation

ImageThere are now requirements for mandatory selective coordination in 4 different Articles in the NEC. The first, in Article 620, was added in 1993 for elevator circuits.  The second and third, in Articles 700 and 701, for emergency systems and legally required standby systems, were added in the 2005 NEC.  The most recent, in Article 708, for Critical Operations Power Systems, was added in the 2008 NEC.  Click here to review a presentation on the reasons that selective coordination is required for life-safety-related systems in the NEC by Cooper Bussman.

  • I would have liked to view the presentation on selective coordintation, but it is apparently presented in an unusual formate (Articulate) that I don't have and have never heard of. I went to the Articulate site, but there is apparently no free viewer, or I couldn't locate one. I'd recommend limiting presentations to more standard formats in the future if possible.

Don, the Flash Demo has now been upgraded to play on Flash 10, so you should be good to go. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Vince Saporita

  • The basic concept of selective coordination, on the surface, is wonderful. The downside is that practically it is difficult/impossible in many cases in the instantaneous region of the tripping characteristic. Of course the addition of the requirement in 700 and 701 was pushed in by Bussman, as they had the most to gain. There will be plenty of emergency/critical circuits that will have fuses as a result of the requirement, and since the proper replacement will not be available quickly, there will be much more downtime, then if this requirement didn't exist. Of course JMHO

We are sorry for this inconvenience. The Flash demo was designed for and works with Flash 9. Since the Flash demo was posted on our web site, Flash 10 was introduced, and we just found out on Wednesday that our Flash demo does not work with the new Flash 10 software. We are working feverishly to modify the demo to play with the newer software. Sincerely, Vince Saporita, VP Technical Marketing and Services, Cooper Bussmann

  • The prsentation on Selective Coordination is very interesting. I am wondering if there is any information on the types of facilities that require such an installation, IE: Phone company Central Offices, Cellular providors, Hospitols, etc.
