Vocal Smoke Alarm

imageChildren can sleep through just about anything. Click here to watch a disturbing video of children sleeping right through the smoke alarms in their homes. More than half of young children that die in fires are asleep – a solution may be to use a voice alert with a recording of the parent’s voice rather than a beeping alert. Studies are showing this alert to be much more effective in rousing children from sleep.

  • Mike is a very busy guy, trying to earn a living. He posted this info , not for the betterment of his company just to get people talking and acting. I am wondering why the respondents, that want to spoon feed , do not do their own research to find the product and it 's availability, using the internet is so easy to find products. It is not like when we had to use the "Thomas Register" to find products.

There are only so many companies that make smoke detectors it would be very easy to contact each one of them to get their latest specs and insight on what is in the pipeline.

  • Good idea it is used in industrial complexes as a package usual alarm but with a voice telling "this is an emergency leave the building by the nearest exit......." This gets a better responce than a plain Jane/Joe siren/beeper alarm.

  • It appeared that the smoke detectors were outside the bedrooms. Our jurisdiction requires detectors in bedrooms and outside bedrooms. I wonder how that would affect the study?

  • I agree with the comment that high frequency loss can not here the alarm going off they also cannot hear the battery chrip when the battery is going dead.

  • This sounds like an excellent device that will hopefully save many lives, both young and old. Will you do a follow up and notify your subscribers when this alarm becomes available in battery and or 120v versions

  • I put a water leak detector in my water softener tank at home. It has a choice (with a switch) of a high pitch alarm (like a smoke detector) or a very pleasant piece of music. I chose the latter. One night, recently, it went off, and my brain included the music in my dream. The dream suddenly included an ice cream truck playing that song. Fortunately, I woke up after a few stanzas. No damage. The sensor had slipped.

  • There was a report on this on Dateline, I think. They did a test with the alarm one night and the parents voice on the alarm the next night. The parents voice worked! This is a VERY good idea! Sandie

  • This is a great idea. However I cannot find these available that are 120 volt with battery backup and that will interconnect with other detectors within the dwelling. Let me know if in fact they are available in the 120 volt/BB version with interconnect capabilities and who the manufacturer is.

  • Great Idea. Hope it replaces the current requirement. You could give instructions on where to go or how to get out. It should come with a standard loud (default) voice.
