Protect Yourself from Electric Shock and Fire

Another great free resource!

It's always our pleasure to give back to the industry as much as we can, whenever we can, and we're pleased to share with you this PDF on GFCI and AFCI Protection, based on NEC requirements.

Ground-Fault and Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter protection have been required by the National Electrical Code since the 1960s for GFCI and since the 1990s for AFCI protection. As technology has progressed, the protection and reliability provided by these devices has improved. This has triggered a number of changes in Articles 210, 220, and 422 in the NEC.

Check out this handy PDF resource that highlights the changes for the 2023 NEC included in rules 210.8 and 210.12.

These pages are extracted from Mike Holt's Illustrated Guide to Understanding the National Electrical Code Volume 1, based on the 2023 NECClick here to purchase or review this textbook and other products from Mike's Understanding the National Electrical Code series. • Hi Mike..great job I recently changed a TR gfci in an elderly folks home. It was actually 6 gfci ‘s . There should be an exception to the rule to install non tamper resistant devices for the elderly or handicapped. The issue is that they have alot of trouble putting in a plug into tamper resistant devices. The older we all get we loose strength and cannot push the plug in. Thanks, Anthony IBEW LOCAL 3

I understand and I wish that were possible. By the way, I visited your New Local Training center a few years ago and visited with the instructors and students. I was impressed!

  • This man and his mission is amazing. I, like some, read the code and get a bit lost due to the wording. The simplicity of his teachings from these emails and the Facebook videos, where he breaks it down to normal people terms, makes learning that much more enjoyable. I teach electrical in a high school setting, and from my 25 plus years of being in the field as an electrician, I'm still learning new things about this field and the NEC. I try to teach in a way that is enjoyable while utilizing some of Mike's techniques in addition to my own. Understanding the code, and being able to explain it, makes working in the electrical field and teaching it in class much easier. I hope you never quit doing these teachings and the emails. Just when I think I understand something fully, I often find out that there is something else I didn't know as well. I am one who is teachable, and if I am wrong, I will always be that person who will own my mistakes and use it as a teachable moment. I don't want to be the "dinosaur" Mike talks about. Thanks again for everything you do for us and the trade. Without you, many wouldn't be as successful as they are today.
