Ground-Fault and Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter protection have been required by the National Electrical Code since the 1960s for GFCI and since the 1990s for AFCI protection. As technology has progressed, the protection and reliability provided by these devices has improved. This has triggered a number of changes in Articles 210, 220, and 422 in the NEC.
