Just In Case – Auto Safety Kit

Mike,

Last Friday I had to run an errand. I got about a half of a mile from my house when a fellow beeped his horn at me and, pulling alongside, he yelled that I had a flat tire. I pulled over and checked and, sure enough, my right rear tire was flat!

Fortunately, the bead had not yet broken AND I had a portable air compressor in the trunk. Ten minutes later, I was back on the road heading for the local tire store. Within an hour I was good to go and completed my errand.

Here's the point: If I had not had that compressor, I would have had to

A. Change the tire, mounting the spare - a BIG hassle

B. Call a tow truck - BIGGER hassle, expensive and time consuming

If I were wearing a suit, had been a woman wearing a nice out fit, or been an elderly person, things would have been even worse. It's very dangerous trying to change a tire on a freeway and even on some busy residential streets.

BTW: While I was waiting for the tire store to do its thing, a clerk in an office supply store told me she had the same thing happen to her and didn't pull over until she heard the rim scraping the pavement - at 60 MPH! Talk about dangerous! The suspensions on late model cars work too well sometimes.

Mike Holt’s Response: After reading Pat’s email I decided to purchase a Just in Case - Auto Safety Kit for each of my employees and family members (I have seven adult kids that drive). In the few weeks that we have had the safety kit I myself and Sean (our shipping administrator) have run into situations where we’ve had to use our kit (Me – jumper cables and Sean - portable air compressors).

Response from Sean (shipping administrator): Mike,image1 thank you for the road side emergency package you gave me. One week before you set me up with the kit I had a blow out. I changed my tire and drove about 25 yards where I hit another piece of debris and blew out my spare.

Last weekend I purchased 4 new tires for the truck. When I left work this evening I realized I had a flat rear tire, I had run over a nail and over the course of the day it had gone completely flat. Now, I would have been in deep trouble if it wasn’t for the new air compressor you gave me.

I received this feedback from the company about what's going on with the stock of this item:

"The problem is we are out of stock at this time ,we are attempting to get a date of delivery from the Justin Case company. This is a popular item we filled several large orders since I last spoke to you that depleated our stock. The buyer will be giving me an answer today , as soon as we have confrimation that our order has shipped we will adjust the web site and allow orders."

I've asked that the company let us know when these are back in stock and we'll let you all know as well. Thank you

  • Mike,

I always laughed when I saw those compressors. Even after someone helped my wife get a truck tire re-inflated out in the country (I am a slow learner!) One night about 9:00 I left the gym for home , some 25 miles away. I ran over a bolt that poked a hole in tire and left a big shoulder on tsurface. THUMP! THUMP! I though about the distance home, and went to a 24hr. BIG BOX DISCOUNT (OK Wal-Mart) and got a little 12Volt compressor and plug kit. A few minutes in parking lot, instead of emptying trunk, changing tire, home and back and then to the tire store at an inconvienient time, then repack the tire and repack the trunk. .

This is why I say you have full freedom to include ANYTHING you find of interest in news letters. thanks, Lynn

  • Mike the only thing needed to make it complete is a tube of waterless hand cleaner and a tire plug repair. That way you just pull out the nail, patch your tire and keep on trucking. A similair set up has saved me when I was in the boondocks where there are no cell phones and the nearest house was a mile away.

  • I am very interested in purchasing a couple of the auto emergency kits which you mentioned on your web site, especially with the disacount you mentioned is in effect for four days only. When I went to the Autobarn website using the link you provided and clicked on the "Add to Cart' button, the screen changed and showed the kit and its catalog number, etc.with a quqntity of "zero" in the shopping cart. When I clicked the "Modify Quantity" button the new screen says "There are no items in the shopping cart". Duh! I tried high liting in order to change the quantity, but nothing seemed to work. Long story short, would you please contact them and find out what is going on? Thanks and keep up the great newsletter. God Bless.

  • Where's the Duct Tape? What would Red Green say? Looks like a good kit save for this missing item (unless it's there and I missed it).

Unfortunately I did not open this until Saturday morning, 5/13. They are completely sold out and I was not able to purchase.

Thank you for the information. I will purchase these for my family when they become available.

  • Mike: If you check some of the European Vehicle Regs, you will find that much of this stuff is required by Law. It seems to me that making a spare-lamp kit (with fuses, too), flare rack and flares, and fire extinguisher mandatory equipment sold with all new cars.. shouldn't cost more than $50 to add at the factory !

  • Duct tape is also really good for electrical layout. International Exposition Center in Cleveland, Ohio uses miles of the stuff to lay out exhibition booth boundaries, where the electricals and plumbing go, and so forth.

More recently I used duct tape on the capstone at the top of a concrete block commercial building wall to lay out 7 outdoor fixture locations over the 258 foot length of this wall. I was able to write on the tape with felt tips pen instead of writing directly on the tile capstone or concrete block. Duct tape sticks very well to the tile capstone and can be seen from the ground if applied correctly.

Duct tape is indeed the handyman's secret weapon.
