Swimming Pool Safety

Image Let's stop the deaths!

Too many people (most of them children) are getting killed in swimming pools. Having laws and Code rules is important, but if they are not respected and followed, they will not keep your pool safe. The answer lies in understanding and knowing how to recognize and fix the hazardous wiring errors and ground faults that exist in older pools, and even in newer installations.

Mike is committed to electrical safety, and has set up a dedicated web page to give you all the information you need to help you understand pool safety. After reading all the stories we reported recently about the accidents and deaths attributed to energized swimming pool water he immediately set out to make a video to teach electricians how to test swimming pools for safety.

Visit the web page and watch the 4 videos posted. It's really important that you understand the fundamentals of electrical safety, stray voltage and Article 680.26 of the NEC, so be sure to watch the videos in the order listed. There's also a link to download and print a Mike Holt publication Swimming Pools, Spas, and Hot Tubs, based on the 2014 NEC.

There isn't a better time than now, when people all over the country, especially children, take to swimming pools for summer fun and recreation. Take responsibility, and get educated so that you can do your part in preventing another tragedy. These are just some of the tragic stories:

Go directly to the web page by clicking here or on the swimming pool image on the top right of this page. You can also get there from our videos pages when you select any Swimming Pool Equipotential Bonding video clip.

As always, feel free to use and share the information on the page, and as usual, we appreciate your feedback.

  • Hi I have a question. Do you or anyone out there know of a device that detects voltage in the water of the pool and sets off an alarm that works well. Also if something like this exists how come is not in the code we should have an alarm on every pool that will sound if voltage strays into the water.

  • Personally, we should keep the hazard away. Understanding that luminaires in pools are a must if you swim in the dark, but technology has advanced so much that there is no need for 120V luminaires to be in the pool. For years I thought about the purpose of this "within 20'" receptacle. Most of my colleagues said it is for convenience. I just do not know what the convenience is, my kids have not used their "boom box" in ages and now-a-days they used bluetooth speakers. Hopefully is not stray voltage causing these fatalities. Time for a change.

  • I have been concerned with th recent change regarding the twist lock no longer being required. If the pump motor is disconnected from the standard receptacle in order to use it for something else the equipontital bonding will be no longer at equipment grounding conductor potential . Stray voltages and a bonded pool not at ground potential !!! Keep in mind the code still allows the required convience receptacle to be up to 20 ft. Away from the pool.
