Mike’s Performance at the 2007 National Barefoot Championships
Mike Holt, four-time National Overall Barefoot Champion (1988, 1999, 2005, and 2006) shatters two Mens Five records, and takes first place in every event in his charge to win his fifth National Overall Barefoot Championship.
One additional fact about Mike’s performance at the 2007 Nationals, is that his combined scores in all three events exceeded the combined scores of all skiers of any age group at the Championship, and he did this at the age of 56!
Mike had a goal for 25 years to perform at a level that would qualify him to ski in the “Open Division,” and at the 2007 National Championships he accomplished his mission. It took a while, but he never gave up. Mike is officially the oldest person in the history of barefoot waterskiing to qualify to ski in an “Open” event with a score of 14.0 in the Wakes event.
What’s next for Mike and barefoot waterskiing? His goals are now focused to qualify and ski the 2008 World Barefoot Championships in New Zealand. What does it take to qualify to ski the Worlds? It won’t be easy for Mike accomplish this feat at his age, since he’ll be competing against some skiers that are younger than one of his daughters.
But if he doesn’t make it, it won’t be because he didn’t try…
