New Book on the Evolution of Artificial Light
In Brilliant, Jane Brox traces the fascinating history of human light from the stone lamps of the Pleistocene to the LEDs embedded in fabrics of the future—and reveals that the story of light is also the story of our evolving selves.
Brilliant is a compelling story and—only a few years before it becomes illegal to sell most incandescent light bulbs in the United States—timely questions about how the light of the future will shape our lives.
Comment:
“Nearly all electricians have worked on a project that towards the end when the lighting is turned on for the first time, the other workers comment ‘Let there be light’, and it’s at that moment we appreciate lighting. To state we don’t appreciate lighting is a vast understatement after you read this book.
It’s well written and really puts our lighting in perspective. Keep in mind the common 100 watt incandescent lamp will not be available in 2012. In the future an electrician will install a luminaire that may very well be in service for their entire career.”
