I service fitness equipment and ran into an interesting situation the other day. The customer built an addition last year and when they put the fitness equipment in the new basement, the treadmill tripped the GFCI outlet. Well yes because there is a DC PWM regen drive on the machine, of course it will trip the GFCI. The new code requires that all unfinished basements require GFCI outlets. It used to be that we could have a single use outlet that was not GFCI. Well those days are gone. Since the fitness equipment industry does not care about the NEC, just the UL listings...they are going to have problems in the near future. My question is can we provide the equipment with a twistlock plug and receptacle to prevent using other appliances on this circuit? Any workarounds would be appreciaed Jeff Fortune
