Massachusetts Requirements for Installing Photovoltaic Systems
On January 30, 2009 the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians issued a letter in response to an inquiry regarding the general licensing requirements for the installation of photovoltaic systems. The letter stated that such systems must be installed by licensed electricians pursuant to a valid permit. Click here to read this letter.
Due to questions raised about this advisory letter, the Board formed a subcommittee to review the matter and after much input from the interested parties, determined, by a majority vote, that the conclusions stated in that January 30, 2009, are the correct and accurate reflection of the Board’s interpretation of the licensing and permitting requirements involving the installation of P.V. systems.
Richard Fredette, Executive Director, issued a Memorandum dated May 1, 2009 addressing those questions.
Massachusetts Board of State Examiners are requesting that local inspectors of wires continue to carry out their important public safety role and assure that P.V. installations, as well as all electrical installations, are conducted pursuant to a valid license, permit, and in accordance with the State Electrical Code, 527 CMR 12.00.
