Why We Celebrate Memorial Day

Image 1My son, Steven Michael Holt got out of the navy last week after five years of service.

This morning, I was driving down the road and I looked at the navy sticker on the windshield of my car. I felt the pride swell up inside me for my son, for my country and for my family. All the men in my family served; my Grandfather was a shellback; my Dad -- military police in Germany.  Uncles, brothers and other family members served in Korea and Vietnam. I am proud of my family. I am proud of my country. I am proud of the boys that didn't come home and the Moms who gave their sons for my freedom.

This country may have its faults, but I stand tall with pride that it is still and always will be the greatest country of all. This weekend is about those Americans who also believe this and gave up their freedom to defend ours. I am so very proud of my son.

  • I remember my tour in S.E. Asia in the Air Force in 70-71. Our return home through Los Angeles was uneventful. Not at all like the folks up in Maine who come to the airport to greet the soldiers and airmen returning from the Middle East. I believe it is in Bangor, Maine. I have seen web reports on it from time to time.

    Still, I am proud to have served and I am also proud to have had 2 sons serve. Dan has decided to remain in the Air Force and has served for 15 years now. He has visited the Middle East 3 times and is due to return next fall.

    Though we may not always agree with our foreign policies, we must never hold those who wear the uniform responsible for them. We sleep soundly at night because our men and women in uniform have chosen to defend freedom wherever they must go.
