Helping the Little Guy Get the Message Out

Image1Over the past 38 years I have had the opportunity to work on numerous electrical projects and like most electricians that have been around as long as I have are considered “Old School.” My wife and I just celebrated our 40th Anniversary this year and have been blessed with four wonderful children and eight beautiful grandchildren. In 1986, I started my own electrical contracting business; Cleveland, Ohio was mainly an industrial town at that time so we geared most of our work in that area. As the mills and industrial companies closed or packed up and moved on, I realized we needed to change.

Change was difficult for me as it is for most people and watching my electricians putting away the pipe benders and rolling out the MC Cable was quite a struggle. Time after time I ask my electrician’s “can’t we make this look better?” and I always got the same answer,” if we had something better we would.” So I started working on an MC Cable Support System that would improve the finished product my electricians were trying to achieve. One day I picked up a plastic bottle cap and noticed the rifled design, it was the same profile as MC Cable; at that point I knew I had something and “Clip It” was born.

I sent out thousands of samples asking electricians all over the country to try “Clip It”. The response was unbelievable; every single electrician we contacted, or those that contacted us, had nothing but positive comments. Soon after, I had electricians asking if we could design supports for many different unique applications. I realized then I have an entire team of designers out there with no agenda other then wanting an MC support that works. I truly feel blessed that so many electricians all over the country take the time and effort to stop and see us at trade shows, send e-mails and even call me personally with their ideas.

After months of design and UL testing we finally have our first MC Support. It’s like nothing you have ever seen before and will change the way MC Cable is supported for years to come. With input from my “pool of designers” and the passion I have for the electrical industry.

I believe so strongly in this product that I would like to offer free samples to anyone that has an interest in the product. All they have to do is go to www.TryClipit.com and sign up for a free sample pack of Clip-it products (see photo above).

  • I have had the opportunity to use the Time Saver Products and found them to be very satisfactory, and they do save time.

  • To my knowledge, UL does list MC fasteners, straps, supports.

In fact an inspector not to long ago asked to see the listing on a MC product. I just so happened to have it in my notebook of product listings in the gang box. He was so nice, I even let him autograph the page. It's called my CYA notebook. Like doing homework in school and handing it into the teacher. Except.... I am the teacher.

I'm all for trying new products, ideas, concepts to make things easier, faster, less expensive. However those products must meet with all my requirements as well as meet code requirements.

So one might assume there might be a problem with this Clipit MC Cable Support System if not listed. Surely won't be a problem if nobody asks for the product listing. In which case some will pass and some fail. A friend EC said he used them and passed. Depends on the quality of inspector I would presume. Or was it his lucky day..!!

I did try this Clipit strapping system this week in fact on a very small job, I will reserve my full opinion at the moment, no inspection as of yet. Since I was not able to confirm the product is UL listed, this small job is easily remediated to listed products/materials. Thus I will not be using them on larger jobs.

The Clipit Stud strap was a bit tricky to install, not all steel studs are the same exact dimension so they went on real tight, had to klein hammer them on.

BTW the Arlington Industries MC310 single cable straps are listed.

My personal favorite for Single/Multi MC strapping is Erico CJ6, CJ6 are UL listed also.

  • Is the product listed by UL or other NRTL for use as a raceway support?
