Fun Reasoning Questions and Answers

Here are the answers to yesterday's newsletter. Let's see how well you did!

First Question: You are a participant in a race – you overtake the second person. What position are you in?
Answer: If you answered that you are first, then you are absolutely WRONG! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, YOU are in second place!

Second Question: If you overtake the last person, then what place are you in...?
Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are WRONG again. Tell me Sunshine, how can you overtake the LAST person?? You're not very good at this, are you?

Third Question: The answer to this question must be done in your head, do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Here we go – take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10. What is the total?
Answer: Did you get 5000? Sorry, but the correct answer is actually 4100. If you don't believe it, check it with a calculator! Today is definitely not your day, is it? Maybe you'll get the next question right... Maybe...

Fourth Question:
Mary's father has five daughters:
1. Nana
2. Nene
3. Nini
4. Nono
5. What is the name of the fifth daughter?
Answer: Did you answer Nunu? Well of course it isn't! Her name is Mary!

Final Question: A mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is done. Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of sunglasses; how does HE indicate what he wants?
Answer: It's really very simple – he opens his mouth and asks for it...

  • You can over take the last person if you are in First place do to the fact that you have just put them a lap down.

  • Question 1 has an alternate solution.

The person in first place could lap the person in second place. Therefore, you could overtake the person in second place and be (remain) the person in first place.

  • I basically got all of the answers but I think that you reversed questions 1 & 2. Regardless, the answer to whether you can overtake the last person is either a) it is impossible [as you stated] or b) it is unknowable because you are running laps on a circular track and you can overtake (lap) the person in last place. In the case of b) your place in the race is unknowable as you may or may not be the first person to lap the last place person.

  • It's not nice to trick mother nature -- a e i o u of course the last daughters name is nunu -- or we loose the logic of the question. O well you win some and you loose some. I too thought the question were fun.

    I was always taught to sum number by their relationship -- 10 to 10 100 to 100 and 1000 to 1000 then answer could only be 4000 + 100 = 40100 - right!

  • Hey Mike, Look at the answer for the second question again. Think about this! , what if you are the leader and you overtake or Lap the last person you are still in first and the last person is still last!!!!! There is no one correct answer!!

  • My name is not Sunshine, if you lap the last person, YOU can overtake the last person. This does not make you in first but you CAN overtake the last person

  • Question # 2...If the race took place on an oval track, and you overtook the person in last place, you would be in first place having lapped him, or her.

  • Question #2 Another possibility. You could be in any position ahead of that last person if you are passing them. (lapping). Any other thoughts?

  • ok Mike you do have me confused on #2. I think of a race as a circle.(like a nascar race) So any of the cars in front of the last person could overtake the last car. #1 in the race would overtake him first.
