Encouragement - Parable of the Frog

A group of frogs were hopping contentedly through the woods, going about their froggy business, when two of them fell into a deep pit. All of the other frogs gathered around the pit to see what could be done to help their companions. When they saw how deep the pit was, they agreed that it was hopeless and told the two frogs in the pit that they should prepare themselves for their fate, because they were as good as dead.

Unwilling to accept this terrible fate, the two frogs began to jump with all of their might. Some of the frogs shouted into the pit that it was hopeless, and that the two frogs wouldn't be in that situation if they had been more careful, more obedient to the froggy rules, and more responsible.

The other frogs continued sorrowfully shouting that they should save their energy and give up, since they were already as good as dead. The two frogs continued jumping with all their might, and after several hours of this, were quite weary. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to the calls of his fellow frogs. Exhausted, he quietly resolved himself to his fate, laid down at the bottom of the pit, and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could, although his body was wracked with pain and he was quite exhausted.

Once again, his companions began yelling for him to accept his fate, stop the pain and just die. The weary frog jumped harder and harder and, wonder of wonders, finally leaped so high that he sprang from the pit.

Amazed, the other frogs celebrated his freedom and then gathering around him asked, "Why did you continue jumping when we told you it was impossible?"

The astonished frog explained to them that he was deaf, and as he saw their gestures and shouting, he thought they were cheering him on. What he had perceived as encouragement inspired him to try harder and to succeed against all odds.

This simple story contains a powerful lesson. The book of Proverbs says, "There is death and life in the power of the tongue." Your encouraging words can lift someone up and help them make it through the day. Your destructive words can cause deep wounds; they may be the weapons that destroy someone's desire to continue trying -- or even their life. Your destructive, careless word can diminish someone in the eyes of others, destroy their influence and have a lasting impact on the way others respond to them.

Be careful what you say. Speak life to (and about) those who cross your path. There is enormous power in words. If you have words of kindness, praise or encouragement -- speak them now to, and about, others. Listen to your heart and respond.

Someone, somewhere, is waiting for your kind and encouraging words...

I can see why the deaf frog was "astonished". Apparently his great leap out of the pit somehow restored his hearing.

You will find that most people don't hate someone for what they are but for what they think thay are. If you look for the good you will see the good and if you look for the bad that is what you will see. Take time to love everybody and see what it does for you.

  • Yes, Ive always loved this story but when I was young it had a bit of twist. The frog jumped into a bucket of cream and kept kicking until it turned to butter. Then he jumped clear. Of course we keep kicking as long as we can, because as a wise man once said-his name was Yogi Berra-"The hardest thing to predict is the future" And when you come to that fork in the road, take it. Happy New Year. '

  • When I was a small boy many years ago my Dad would sit me down regularly and we would read the Bible and he would explain it to me. One of the "sessions" I remember to this day had to do with the destructive power of the "evil tongue." Both new and old testaments are filled with comments related to good and evil speech. Matthew, Jeremiah and Psalms come to mind. I'm sure there are others and I would have to believe that other religions also have comparable advice. Too bad it's too often ignored.

  • Thanks Mike -- one of your most admirable assets is your willingness to share your faith. Sometimes the curve ball of sharing a simple story, puts the ball squarely over the plate of life.

"What should a man profit if he gain the whole world and end up loosing his sole." Knowledge for knowledge sake, as the bible says is just vanity. Give me someone with people skills and I will give you a happy person. After all isn't happiness the greatest quest of One's life. So to be happy you must learn to sow happiness, "for what you sow or plant you also shall reap." Happy New Years -- and here's may encouragement for a happy and prosperate NEW YEAR!!! John Gary

  • How right for our times. I spoke to a youth group who were having issues with self esteem and some had contemplated suicide. i told them that I twice had attempted the same thing. My issue was I told no one of my thoughts but those who were as low as me, except one friend. If I had succeeded I would never have been able to help others.

Without finding encouragement we can fail. If we don't ask for help, we'll find none. When asked for help, we MUST offer it. Even the person beside you may have the power to help you out of your situation having been in your shoes before. How will you know if you don't ask? How can you help if you don't talk? Use your weapon (tongue) for good. Lift up and support those around or we will never rise above.

  • The effect of words on one depends on one's self-esteem.Consider,for example, suggesting sea sickness to some new sea traveller by pretending he is suffering from its symptoms.Chances are there that he will start to suffer actually from sea sickness. But pretend the same to the captain of the ship;he will brush you away, laughing. So we be 'the captains' in as many circumstances as possible.

  • First of all happy new year 2009 to all you who will read this and specially to Mike Holt it is a blessing just being included in your website their exists two types of ways of saying things like a Technical manager who tells demands / the other way is like an interactive manager who explains and listens. I believe no one in a righteous way of thinking would make a mistake knowingly that it would cause him a sorrow moment we are human and lets treat others like we would like to be treated lets be professional i am a true believer in motivation before condemnation Thank You Jose A Guillen the inspector

  • Awesome story and how true-when you come to the end of your rope tie a knot and hang on-encourage others to do the same-and let them know they are never alone-for it is when we see one set of footprints in the sand that we are being carried-they are not ours. Live and practice the teachings of the one who presides over us all.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand. Sometimes satan wants you to read too much into something which can allow you to doubt. As the Bible says, don't add anything to it or take anything away from it--which is His teachings.
