  • FOR A HOOD AT A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT, I HAVE SHUNT TRIP BREAKERS FEEDING THE HOOD EXHAUST AND MAKE UP AIR FANS, A FIRE SUPPRESSION PANEL WITH AN EMERGENCY PUSHBUTTON THAT ACTIVATES THE SHUNT BREAKERS, THE FIRE SUPPRESSION PANEL AND SHUTS DOWN THE HVAC UNITS. IT ALSO CLOSES THE GAS VALVE WHICH SHUTS DOWN ALL OF THE GAS EQUIPMENT UNDER THE HOOD. THE QUESTION BY THE ELEC CONTRACTOR IS " DO THE RECEPTACLES UNDER THE HOOD NEED TO BE SHUNT TRIPPED ALSO.

In Quebec Canada it is not allowed home owners to do their wiring. As an electrician in Winnipeg, I had close calls - sparks when crawling around in an attic, touching a fluorescent with a screwdriver and at the same time touching another bx cable - shorted out - no marretts inside. Sharp bent nmd cable caught fire at a corner, exploding junction box when just removimg a cover. It is very dangerous to go and repair wiring done by unqualified people. A few deaths in Manitoba due to electrical fires.

  • Hi; I saw the show on Jan. 10th at 10pm central. The electrician just grabs the plug and the wires popped off? He should have been surprized to see that! Also he then twists the wires with the seemingly wire stripping tool instead of using proper plyers? - Strange - He then twists all wires so that particular plug can not be energized again (not needed or improper area?) However, an electrician should not do that - Later a dumm home owner will be encouraged to install a larger circuit breaker = a possible fire even with the right breaker! That is the same as testing a circuit breaker with a short circuit - a no no.
