Brooke Stauffer

by John Grau

All of us at NECA are saddened by the sudden loss of Brooke Stauffer. He presumably died in a private plane accident on August 24, although the plane’s wreckage has not yet been found.

H. Brooke Stauffer

Brooke was NECA’s Executive Director of Standards and Safety for 12 years. When his predecessor, Charlie Hart, retired after 40 years of service to NECA I thought that we would never find another person to fill his shoes. But Brooke did so, and he set a new standard of his own. NECA was privileged to have him serve our association.

Working with the National Electrical Code is an exacting job, and Brooke was a leader in shaping that Code. He was recently appointed to head the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Electrical Section—both an honor and recognition that Brooke was one of the nation’s top code experts. He also created and sheparded the development of the NECA National Electrical Installation Standards (NEIS). NEIS was a brand new venture for NECA, and its success was largely due to Brooke’s efforts. He was a popular speaker at electrical inspector conferences and earned a reputation for promoting high quality, safe electrical installations.

You would expect someone like Brooke to have a strong technical background, but he was a writer first and foremost. He authored a number of books for NFPA and regularly wrote interesting and compelling articles and reports.

I am sure Brooke would claim that the greatest achievement in his life was raising three wonderful children and watching them become successful adults. He was a great father, engaged and supportive of his children’s activities and interests. His fiancée Karen Dodds was just as outgoing and engaging as Brooke. I always enjoyed sharing a table with them at various industry events.

Brooke was one of a small group within the office that I regularly grab a sandwich with at lunch. It was pretty quiet around the table today. We all have our memories of good times with Brooke, and we all miss him.

Mike Holt's Comment:
Brooke was a dear personal friend of our family and he will be terribly missed by us all.

  • Brooke and I worked together many years ago on some of the NECA/ANSI standards and getting them accepted in Miami-Dade County. Just recently, we were reunited as Mike brought us into his family of Instructors.

BJ and I immediately struck up a warm relationship with Brooke and Karen. My respect for him became even greater as we studied under Mike this last July in Ft Lauderdale to hone our techniques on teaching.

I am optimistically holding out that some good end will reveal itself from this sudden dissappearance.

  • Mike, my condolences to you and your family and H. Brooke Stauffer's family. It's very hard to loose a loved one. But know that he will be in a better place and his hard work will make others safer.

  • Having been associated with Brooke since his days at NEMA I echo all the wonderful memories and accomplishments published by his multitude of friends. Each of us is finding it difficult to believe. I only met Karen briefly, but do know his feelings for her and have heard so much about her. My sympathy goes out to the children. Your father was someone of which to be proud, as he was of each of you. The industry will miss you Brooke.

  • I would like to add that Brook Stauffer was the \'motor\' behind the \"Code-Question-of-the-Day\" Every day an e-mailed question, with the answer the next day. Another person was the \"expert\" but Brooke was the voice. I had a number of exchanges with him by e-mail; and he was genuine, friendly and great.

The Code-Question-on-the-Day continues, but without the great hand of Brooke. A lesson that we should all learn, and that Mike has often reminded us of: Life is what is happening now. Do not put off good and kind things to some indefinate future that may not come to us.

  • I have had the privilidge of meeting Brooke many years ago. He honored me by sending me autographed copies of one of his children's books for myself and my children. This past spring I had the pleasure of meet ing Karen, a beautiful, intelligent woman. Watching the two of them holding hands made me happy to know how much they loved each other. Recently I took Brooke out to dinner and showed him where we had lived, surprisingly I received a beautiful note thanking me for being let into a corner of our lives. His authnticity as a great human being will be missed by so many. Our deepest sympathy to both of their families.
