250.8 Termination of Grounding and Bonding Conductors

The termination of equipment grounding and bonding conductors must be by exothermic welding, listed pressure connectors of the set screw or compression type, listed clamps, or other listed fittings. Sheet-metal screws cannot be used to connect grounding (earthing) or bonding conductors or connection devices to enclosures. Figure 250–42

Author’s Comment: The rule still doesn’t prohibit drywall screws or wood screws from being used for this purpose, just “sheet-metal” screws!

04. Grounding versus Bonding Library - DVDs
Grounding and bonding problems are at epidemic levels. Surveys repeatedly show a high percentage of power quality problems are due to poor grounding and bonding. Electrical theory has been applied to this difficult to understand Article, making it easier for students to grasp the concepts of grounding and bonding. Additionally, Mike has color coded the graphics so you can easily differentiate between grounding and bonding. For a limited time, you can order the Entire Grounding versus Bonding Library including the textbook, 2 videos, MP3 Audio CD and the Online Program for this great price. You save over $200!

  • That doesn't make much sense. Sheet-metal screws would hold much better than the other two mentioned in the author's comment. "Author’s Comment: The rule still doesn’t prohibit drywall screws or wood screws from being used for this purpose, just “sheet-metal” screws!"

The word "listed" says it all.

"insurance policies sometimes have clauses in them that will limit their liability in case of a claim made in response to the failure of a non-UL-listed device."

    Interesting point!

  • Mike, I was a little concerned about the statement that drywall or wood screws are ok to use. They usually have a beveled head and are not threaded all the way to the head of screw. I would be very skeptical and wary of this connection and would turn down a ground attached with either wood or drywall screws for attaching the ground as shown. Thank you

  • Dear Sir,

I would like to know in articule 250, which rule deal with the bonding of different grounding electrodes from services like: electricity, communication, antena, lightning, etc. More specificaly lightning electrode shall be bounded or isolated from others grounding electrodes? Thanks Eng. Carlos Haug
