Grounding and Bonding

250.34 Generators – Portable and Vehicle-Mounted

Revision clarifies when portable and vehicle-mounted generators are not required to be grounded to a grounding electrode.

(A) Portable Generators. The frame of a portable generator isn’t required to be grounded to a grounding electrode as defined in 250.52 if: Figure 250-13
(1) The generator only supplies equipment or receptacles mounted on the generator, and (2) The metal parts of the generator and the receptacle terminal for the connection of the equipment grounding (bonding) conductor are bonded to the generator frame.

(B) Vehicle-Mounted Generators. The frame of a vehicle-mounted generator isn’t required to be grounded to a grounding electrode as defined in 250.52 if: Figure 250-14
(1) The generator frame is bonded to the vehicle frame,
(2) The generator only supplies equipment or receptacles mounted on the vehicle or generator, and
(3) The metal parts of the generator and the receptacle terminal for the connection of the equipment grounding (bonding) conductor are bonded to the generator frame.

What do you consider the frame to be those black bars around it? 1) The generator only supplies equipment or receptacles mounted on the generator, I think that should state And ?

  • Dear Mike,

In case there is a leakage at the handtool and at the same time the portable generator frame is touching the ground, the earth fault current might pass through the operator body and return to the generator frame thus injure the operator. Therefore Is it better to bond the workpiece with the generator frame so that the operator is working inside an equipotential zone.

  • What is the code requirement when the portable generator is tied into the electrical system of the home via a transfer switch?

  • "For proper operation of a two pole GFCI breaker supplying a two wire 240v receptacle (L6-20R), a solid neutral/equipment ground bond is required on a vehicle mounted generator system".

    True or False?

(I know this has nothing to do with a grounding electrode, just curious.)

  • Dear Mr. Holt,

Does the 2002 NEC require that an existing patio slab that is not part of a new in ground pool structure need to have the existing reinforcement in the slab exposed (i.e. break up the concrete) and bonded to the rest of the pool structure? In one case assume it is 4.5 feet away from the pool of the pool. In another case assume it is 10 feet away from the pool.

  • The rule is 250.24(B)(2) The generator supplies only equipment located on the vehicle or cord-and-plug-connected equipment through receptacles mounted on the vehicle, or both equipment located on the vehicle and cord-and-plug-connected equipment through receptacles mounted on the vehicle or on the generator, and
