Keeping up with the requirements of the Code should be the goal of everyone involved in electrical safety. The following is what I feel is an important rule in the 2023 NEC®, complete with graphics and a video. I encourage you to use it as a training resource for your organization, and share it with your colleagues.

During a medical procedure a patient may have a limited ability to react to an electric shock or may be completely unconscious. This risk is addressed in section 517.13 of the NEC which lays out the EGC requirements for patient care spaces in health care facilities. To ensure that the patient is protected, the branch-circuit wiring method must consist of a two-part effective ground-fault current path that is unique to patient care spaces.

The effective ground-fault current path for patient care spaces must have a metal raceway or metal cable armor that that qualifies as an equipment grounding conductor per 250.118. Additionally, there must be an insulated copper equipment grounding conductor of the wire type. Read the attached PDF then join Mike and the team on the video as they discuss the requirements of 517.13 in the NEC.
