During a medical procedure a patient may have a limited ability to react to an electric shock or may be completely unconscious. This risk is addressed in section 517.13 of the NEC which lays out the EGC requirements for patient care spaces in health care facilities. To ensure that the patient is protected, the branch-circuit wiring method must consist of a two-part effective ground-fault current path that is unique to patient care spaces.
The effective ground-fault current path for patient care spaces must have a metal raceway or metal cable armor that that qualifies as an equipment grounding conductor per 250.118. Additionally, there must be an insulated copper equipment grounding conductor of the wire type.
