Mike Holt Enterprises Understanding the NEC

Keeping up with the requirements of the Code should be the goal of everyone involved in electrical safety. The following is what I feel is an important rule in the 2020 NEC®, complete with graphics and a video. I encourage you to use it as a training resource for your organization, and share it with your colleagues.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems, Rapid Shutdown [690.12]

Electricity poses a significant danger to firefighters when working with energized PV systems. To reduce this risk, the NEC has implemented requirements in 690.12 that include a rapid shutdown function for PV system circuits.

To learn more about these requirements, read the attached text and watch the accompanying video, where Mike and the Solar PV team discuss the topic in detail.

  • Solar developers and EV developers are now claiming that instead of paying for a service panel upgrade, a customer can simply have a meter collar adapter installed between the meter and the socket. The meter collar adapter includes a breaker and a plug to connect PV or EV directly without going through the main service panel and protective device. Does the NEC have provisions for the use of meter collar adapters?
