In the electrical industry we frequently reference different system voltages such as 120/240 and 480Y/277. These voltages are known as the nominal voltage and are important both for calculations and the selection of equipment that is used in an electrical system. Rules like 220.5(A) of the NEC indicate that they are the voltage values to be used for performing electrical calculations and manufacturers specify that equipment be connected to a specific nominal system voltage so it can operate properly.
