Keeping up with the requirements of the Code should be the goal of
everyone involved in electrical safety. Following is what I feel is an
important rule in the 2020 NEC®, complete with
graphics and a video. I encourage you to use it as a training resource for
your organization, and share it with your colleagues.
Overvoltage Protection - Article 242 |

Mike Holt's Understanding the National Electrical Code, Volume
1, based on the 2020 NEC.

The first thing you may notice about Article 242 in the 2020 National Electrical Code® is the Informational Note that follows the scope of the article [242.1] which lets us know that it combines and replaces former Articles 280 [Surge Arresters, Over 1000 Volts] and 285 [Surge-Protective Devices (SPD's) 1000 Volts or Less.
Article 242 consists of three parts:
- Part I”General
- Part II”Surge-Protective Devices (SPDs), 1000 Volts or Less and
- Part III”Surge Arresters, Over 1000 Volts
So how much do you really know about SPD's? What is their purpose? How do they accomplish this purpose? How many might be required and where in the electrical system are they to be located? Do you need to install a Type 1 SPD, or Type 2, 3, or 4 and what defines these various Types? Discover the answers to all of these questions and more in this video on Article 242, where myself and an expert panel breakdown everything you need to know about Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) and the theory behind how they provide that protection!
