  • Allow me to make a correction to my last post. I implied that the twisted pair could not be used for the low voltage control. Of course it can. It is just that the twisted pair is usually, not always, used for data. My practice has always been to use a 3 conductor twisted pair to insure its own reference so in this case I would prefer the twisted pair be used for low voltage control. The components that take data are mounted on boards some times costing more than their weight in gold. Control transformers are cheap and usually easy to replace. Running control voltage conductors with 120 volt cable is not new. It was designed for smart home wiring. As for the class restrictions demanded by the NEC my take is that they are paranoidal. But that is an opinion.

  • A twisted pair is always used for data although a third reference conductor is usually added. Data volts are low, usually about 2 to 3 volts and no significant current. I do not know why a low voltage control conductor was not added. Usually this control voltage is about 24 volts supplied by a transformer no greater than 20 VA. You can not operate relays with data alone. Where are your devices going to get control voltages? Certainly not a transformer for each device.

  • This is an interesting cable. When I look at it, and research the applicable codes, I wonder how to maintain the 0.25 inch clearance between the power circuit and the classs 2 and 3 circuits within enclosures required by 2014 NEC 725.136 (D) (1), if where the circuits enter the enclosure they are coming in already not separated? It seems that right where the circuits come together as they are joining to leave through the cable we would have a violation.
