Article 680 - Swimming Pools, Spas, Hot Tubs, Fountains, and Similar Installations

image

You requested it and we produced it! It’s Article 680 from our Understanding the NEC, Volume 2 textbook. This Article is now available as a stand-alone product for everyone who wants to focus on Pools, Spas, Hot Tubs and Fountains. We are offering this now as another free service from Mike Holt Enterprises!

In this type of installation there’s no room for error. A Code misinterpretation can result in invisible lethal voltage gradients right in the water or adjacent ground. If you’re ever going to wire a pool or other water-related structure, now is the time to become knowledgeable in this important area.

It is always our pleasure to give back to the industry as much as we can, whenever we can and this is a perfect opportunity. If you’re interested in this subject, have a look and please give us your feedback.

As an extra bonus we also included Article 90 – Introduction to the NEC!

  • Ive often wanted to produce such a sheet of information for my clients with these types of Rules and Regs that are clearly laid out. Im in the entertainment business and often do Portable Power systems for clients who have no ideas of the legalitys and regulations surrounding power and electricity. Sound, Lighting and Power systems for Fairs, Festivals, and Temporary locations, many of these clients have used sub standard equipment and had electrical contractors use cable and other equipment thats not designed for the rigors of Portable location use. Can you produce a sheet that I could use as an information guide for my clients to make them aware of the rules, regs and dangers. I enjoy the website and have learned many things, Thanks Mike..

  • Thanks for the free swimming pool download. At the risk of looking a gift horse in the mouth, I am suggesting you show how big the file is that needs to be downloaded. hard as it is to image, there are still some of us out here who do not have high speed connections, just the dial up. I am at 11 million 600 thousand bytes, and it is still downloading! It has been a good twenty minutes.

    Thanks anyway!!

Thank you for enhancing the articles mentioned above. As usual, they were clear concise and enriched with the informative illustrations.

I possess a E-1 (Unlinmited) electrical License in Ct. and am in the process of studying to take the Westchester County Master Electrician's License.I purchased your N.E.C 2002 and the 2005 Examination Preparation books to assist me in this task.

Again, thank you for your assistance. Gerald Karas

  • Thanks Mike for the download. I have been utilizing yur site for about the last year on my own pool revamp. Unfortunately, when I asked questions on the forum area, I was typically "talked down to" by other users because I clearly didnt carry a UBEW card. My father started in construction building on his own 50 years ago and, at the time, did everything from the foundation to the sale of the home. I will never claim to be a master electrician, but I think I can muster what it takes to safely deal with electricity in most circumstances, and knew full well that there are a lot of issues and precautions to be taken with pools--many of which I found not addressed when I first tore apart the system. It was built in the late 70's and I know there was not the knowledge that exists today, primarily regarding bonding. Anyhow, thanks again for making it simple for the layman to understand the goals--your a champ

  • Mike, I am viewing the download for swimming pools and spas. I find one part a little confusing. Where it says that any wiring method can be used to supply the pump motors as long as it has an insulated ground, it also has a statement saying that UF, NM, SE can also be used with an uninsulated ground if the ground is in the sheath of the cable. Is this either, or? I'm sorry for not stating the exact wording, but I seemed to have lost the download. I will have to download again. Also thanks for the great information. It came the day after I finished wiring a pool. God Bless.

  • Mike why are low voltage lights not permitted as close to a pool as high voltage lights, even on GFI circuit? thanks Steve.
