AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) technology is advancing rapidly and it’s worth pointing out all available options for electrical professionals…specifically the availability of Outlet Branch Circuit AFCI Receptacles (OBC AFCI).
AFCI receptacles offer an option to AFCI breakers for many installations and offer the following features:
- Compatibility with all homes and wiring systems.
- Often a simpler option for homeowners and electricians when adding or extending a circuit.
- Lends itself to applications where conduit, AC or MC cable is in use. This could include many multiple dwelling units and localities where Code requires.
- Easy to use. Since AFCI receptacle look and functionality is similar to traditional GFCI receptacles, operation is intuitive for homeowners.
Level of Protection
Outlet branch circuit AFCI receptacles are UL listed devices which address the dangers associated with both types of hazardous arcing – parallel and series arcing. Similar to GFCIs, AFCI receptacles provide feed-through protection and are able to detect parallel and series downstream arc-faults as well as upstream series arc-faults.
The National Electrical Code®
Allowances for the use of AFCI receptacles in the 2011 NEC® are limited. New exceptions have been added to the 2014 NEC so be sure to review all of these options. Also, don’t forget that 2011 included AFCI requirements for replacement receptacles that takes effect in 2014; AFCI receptacles may prove to be a very viable option for meeting this requirement.
