2011 Changes to the NEC – 110.3
The following is an instructional page from our 2011 Changes to the NEC Textbook/DVD Package complete with graphics and video where applicable. As part of our on-going effort to provide free resources to help the industry, we will be sending this content as part of a series of newsletters. Each newsletter will feature pages taken directly from our textbooks. This can be a great training resource for your organization!
There are some important features in this text which help to highlight the changes that you should be aware of:
- Each Code section which contains a change includes a summary of the change, followed by a paraphrase of the NEC text affected by the change. Any specific change is denoted by underlined text and in the corresponding chapter color
- Graphics with green borders and 2011 CC icons next to the heading are graphics that contain a 2011 change; graphics without a green border or icon are graphics that support the concept being discussed, but nothing in the graphic was affected by a 2011 Code change.

110.3 Guidelines for Approval of Equipment
Additions to the Informational Note provided guidance on suitability of equipment use.
110.3 Examination, Identification, Installation, and Use of Equipment.
(A) Guidelines for Approval. The authority having jurisdiction must approve equipment. In doing so, consideration must be given to the following:
(1) Suitability for installation and use in accordance with the NEC
Note: Suitability of equipment use may be identified by a description marked on or provided with a product to identify the suitability of the product for a specific purpose, environment, or application. Special conditions of use or other limitations may be marked on the equipment, in the product instructions, or appropriate listing and labeling information. Suitability of equipment may be evidenced by listing or labeling.
(2) Mechanical strength and durability
(3) Wire-bending and connection space
(4) Electrical insulation
(5) Heating effects under all conditions of use
(6) Arcing effects
(7) Classification by type, size, voltage, current capacity, and specific use
(8) Other factors contributing to the practical safeguarding of persons using or in contact with the equipment
(B) Installation and Use. Equipment must be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling requirements.

Author’s Comments:
- See the definitions of “Labeling” and “Listing” in Article 100.
- Failure to follow product listing instructions, such as the torquing of terminals and the sizing of conductors, is a violation of this Code rule.

- When an air conditioner nameplate specifies “Maximum Fuse Size,” one-time or dual-element fuses must be used to protect the equipment.

ANALYSIS: Some pieces of electrical equipment have special requirements, such as limitations on elevation, ambient temperature correction, power quality requirements, or specific types of overcurrent devices. This information may be marked on equipment, it may be in the product literature, or in the listing and labeling information. This rule helps to make all users of electrical equipment aware of these special conditions. |
