Our April 10 newsletter Alternative Power Systems had a great response! I appreciate how the industry came together to provide me with so much information which is being shared with you here. All these links are archived on our website under Technical/Solar Power/Links, and are easily accessible by going directly to

If you have any issues with the links provided, or if you have additional resources please give us your feedback. We will update the site as we receive more information.

Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency: DSIRE is a comprehensive source of information on state, local, utility, and federal incentives and policies that promote renewable energy and energy efficiency. Established in 1995, DSIRE is an ongoing project of the NC Solar Center and the Interstate Renewable Energy Council funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. http://www.dsireusa.org/

Expedited Permit Process for PV Systems (pdf): The information in this guideline is intended to help local jurisdictions and contractors identify when PV system installations are simple, needing only a basic review, and when an installation is more complex. It is likely that 50%‐75% of all residential systems will comply with these simple criteria. For projects that fail to meet the simple criteria, a resolution steps may be suggested to provide a path to permit approval.

Guide to PV System Design and Installation (pdf): The purpose of this document is to provide tools and guidelines for the installer to help ensure that residential photovoltaic power systems are properly specified and installed, resulting in a system that operates to its design potential. This document sets out key criteria that describe a quality system, and key design and installation considerations that should be met to achieve this goal. This document deals with systems located on residences that are connected to utility power, and does not address the special issues of homes that are remote from utility power. http://www.brooksolar.com/files/PV_Install_Guide-Latest_CEC.pdf

Home Solar Magazine: Home Power has become the editorial venue for homeowners, business owners, and renewable energy professionals to exchange equipment, design, installation, and system performance experiences. This information exchange has helped create an industry with not only cutting-edge technology, but perhaps more importantly, a common goal: reducing the use of polluting fossil fuels and replacing this generation capacity with the infinite supplies of renewable energy that surround us. www.homepower.com

NABCEP Study Guide for PV Installers (pdf): This Study Guide presents some of the basic cognitive material that individuals who install and maintain photovoltaic (PV) power systems should know and understand. This information is intended primarily as a Study Guide to help individuals better prepare for the NABCEP PV installer examination but does not provide all of the materials needed for completing the certification examination. Knowledge of the information presented, knowledge of pertinent sections of the National Electrical Code and appropriate experience and qualifications are generally required of those applying for and completing the NABCEP certification process. http://www.brooksolar.com/files/NABCEP_Study_Guide-Revised_Version_3_-_08_05-FINAL.pdf

North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners: NABCEP is a volunteer board of renewable energy stakeholder representatives that includes representatives of the solar industry, NABCEP certificants, renewable energy organizations, state policy makers, educational institutions, and the trades. Each member of the board was chosen because of his or her experience and involvement in the solar energy industry. NABCEP’s mission–to support, and work with, the renewable energy and energy efficiency industries, professionals, and stakeholders–is intended to develop and implement quality credentialing and certification programs for practitioners. http://www.nabcep.org/

Photovoltaic Systems (textbook with CD): This textbook covers the principles of photovoltaics and how to effectively incorporate PV systems into stand-alone or interconnected electrical systems. The content includes system advantages and disadvantages, site evaluation, component operation, system design and sizing, and installation requirements and recommended practices. Common scenarios and procedures are discussed throughout. Specified electrical requirements are in accordance with the 2005 edition of the National Electrical Code®. PV and the NEC: Suggested Practices (pdf): This guide provides information on how the National Electrical Code (NEC) applies to photovoltaic systems. The guide is not intended to supplant or replace the NEC; it paraphrases the NEC where it pertains to photovoltaic systems and should be used with the full text of the NEC. Users of this guide should be thoroughly familiar with the NEC and know the engineering principles and hazards associated with electrical and photovoltaic power systems. http://www.nmsu.edu/~tdi/pdf-resources/pdf%20version%20divided%20PV:NEC/PV-NEC%201.9/PV-NEC-V-1.9-opt.pdf

PV Systems and the National Electrical Code Seminars: Taught by John Wiles works at the Institute for Energy and the Environment, which provides engineering support to the PV industry and a focal point for code issues related to PV systems. http://www.nmsu.edu/~tdi/Photovoltaics/Codes-Stds/C-S-Resources.html?agree=agree

Solar America Board for Codes and Standards: The Solar ABCs improves responsiveness, effectiveness, and accessibility of codes and standards to U.S. solar stakeholders at all levels. The Solar ABCs enhances the practice of developing, implementing, and disseminating solar codes and standards. http://www.solarabcs.org/

Solar Energy International (SEI): SEI is a USA non-profit organization whose mission is to help others use renewable energy and environmental building technologies through education. SEI teaches individuals from all walks of life how to design, install and maintain renewable energy systems, and how to design and build efficient, sustainable homes. SEI offers trainings online and in 22 locations around the world. http://www.solarenergy.org/index.html

Solar Pro Magazine: SolarPro is a high-quality technical publication available by free (electronic or printed) subscription to qualifying solar industry professionals. These are the people who are making solar happen—and no other publication gives them the nuts-and-bolts information they need. http://solarprofessional.com

  • Thank you for this information. I hope to see a topic for Alternative Energy soon on the Code Forum Also, it would be appropriate to solicit the same information on Wind Turbines. I'll be attending an IAEI sponsored presentation on Wind Turbines soon and will pass along what I learn.
