Petrol Tank Explodes After Lightning Strike

On June, 28 2005 an early evening intense rain and lightning storm delivered a lightning strike to the canopy of a Circle K convenience store and gas station in Pinellas Park, Florida causing the tank pad to rise between 3-5 feet. The following article outlines the sequence of events, fuel tank recovery efforts, and cleanup. Also included are pictures taken at the scene which show the extent of the damage.

  • "hot" to say the least. Can you provide more of these? Maybe one (1) a month; as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Imagine the rewiring of New Orleans and the restarts of their pumps?

    Very interesting article. There seems to be pages missng between the ones included. I searched for the article on the internet without any luck.......

  • First, they should not have the vent pipes enclosed in the canopy structure, because I,ve seen many canopies blown over. Second there should be a section of pipe that is non conductive so that the arc does not travel thru the pipe to the tank. Those vent pipes also give off a lot of fumes, and therefore should be in a separate area on the property away from structures that could be a draw for lighting to strick, and properly grounded and possibly made of non-conductive materials.

  • My question as a Fire / Arson Investigator is, can the chemical and or physical elements of an ignitiable liquid vapors act as the conductor, regardless of the material used for the ventilation pipe?
