400.5 Ampacity of Flexible Cords

New rule requires conductor ampacity correction when flexible cords are used in an ambient temperature above 86°F.
Tables 400.5(A) and 400.5(B) list the allowable ampacity for copper conductors in flexible cords with not more than three current-carrying conductors.

Where the ambient temperature exceeds 86°F, the flexible cord ampacity as listed in Table 400.5(A) or 400.5(B) must be adjusted by using the temperature correction factors listed in Table 310.16.

Author’s Comment: Temperature rating for flexible cords are not contained in the NEC, but UL listing standards state that flexible cords are rated for 60°C unless marked otherwise.

  • in most industrial settings liquidtight was used because the so or soow wouldnt handle the lube used on the product.

  • I understand the need for temperature correction factors. What I am unclear on are correction factors for the number of "current carrying conductors". Does this include the ground conductor(s)? Or any control conductors that might be included in a multi conductor flexible cord? For example: A submersible pump fitted with a cable composed of five 10 AWG conductors ( 3 phases,ground and ground check)and two 14 AWG control conductors for the 120v thermal cut-out circuit. It seems to me that the term "current carrying conductors" is kind of a gray area

  • Not clear from this e-mail, by whome this new rule is. Is it a revised UL standard? Is it a proposed new rule for the 08 NEC?

  • so how long does the temp need to be above 86 degrees for the drste to take place. say its 70 degrees most of the time but it gets to be 88 an hour a day?
