440.4 Marking on Hermetic Refrigerant Motor-Compressors and Equipment

(B) Multimotor and Combination-Load Equipment. Multimotor and combination-load equipment must have a visible nameplate marked with the maker’s name, rating in volts, number of phases, minimum conductor ampacity, and the maximum rating of the branch-circuit short-circuit and ground-fault protective device.

Author’s Comment:

The minimum conductor ampacity is calculated in accordance with 440.33 and the branch circuit short-circuit and ground-fault protective device rating is sized with 440.22(B)(1).

  • We've been fighting local inspectors on this for years. Most of the time we just install larger conductors than what's required.

  • In the graphic it looks like the refrigerant lines are located in the 110.26(E)(2)(b) dedicated space for the disconnect, something I see all the time. The disconnect can be 50' from the motor but the installer puts it just inches away from a clear dedicated space.
